Scorcese’s ‘Silence’ Asks What It Really Costs to Follow Jesus

To follow Jesus is to follow him in the way of weakness, the way of self-giving love, the way of silence. It’s the way of “quick to listen, slow to speak.” It’s the way of the weak things shamidownloadng the things that are strong (1 Cor. 1:27), of “greater love has no one than this…” (John. 15:13). We should not seek persecution, but if it comes we should meet it not with pride or power-grabs or verbose defenses, but with the compassion and redemptive silence of our Lord, who was oppressed and afflicted, “yet he did not open his mouth” (Isa. 53:7).
